Healey welcomes new principal An interview with Mr. Sabin by Marisa Rafal and Tuba Omar
As you know, Mr. Sabin is our school principal. But that might be all that you know about him. There are a lot of things about Mr.Sabin that you might not know. Maybe things like the fact that he got into Harvard. Or maybe the fact that he rides his bike to work every day. Well, now you will find out. On Wednesday Oct. 22nd the reporters Tuba, Marisa, and Eliza went downstairs to the office to interview Mr. Sabin. One of the first questions we asked him was: How did you hear the Healey was in need of a principal? He saw an advertisement on the web when he was working in Colombia. Since he originally lived in Massachusetts he contacted some of his friends and came up for the interview. And obviously it was a good interview. We were lucky enough to get him as our principal! One of the things that he wants to do for the school is make sure that kids are exposed to new things; another thing he wants to do for the school is make sure that when the students graduate they are ready to be successful in high school, college, and beyond. He also thinks that kids should not complain as much about the back playground because when he worked at the school in Colombia they did not have a playground at all. In order to get where he is today he first had to go to Harvard University as an undergraduate. After that he taught in Lowell and Cambridge. Then he went back to Harvard and a bit after that he went to Colombia for a year and now he is here at the Healey with us. Another cool thing about Mr. Sabin is that he doesn’t drive to the school, instead he wakes up very early and takes his bike and he arrives at school at 6:45 and works at his desk for 45 minutes then changes out of his biking clothes to greet the students. Mr. Sabin believes that children should be taught about how to get along with each other nicely and how to be good people because when we grow up we will be the leaders of America. We will be the ones who make this country work, and who make sure our children are well protected and happy and Mr. Sabin wants to make sure we know how to do that. So all in all, Mr. Sabin is a great principal, and is going to do great things for our school.

Healey History
A new column
By Tuba Omar
Did you know that the Healey
school was once a play ground?
But wait there was another school
and it was called the Healey school
and do you know where that
Healey school was? It was where
this school is.
The old Healey was rebuilt
because it was too small and too
old. They built another school and
it is the Healey school that we go to
and before the first school there
was a play ground.
The play ground was named after
a soldier and his name was Cesar
A. Marchi and he was in world war
one. He was the first American
soldier of Italian origin from
Somerville to die in the first world
war.
Our visit to the Somerville News
by Alexis Flores
We were in the Somerville News office and there were two men
talking about how they get stories for their newspaper. The
editor George P. Hassett said some of the ways he gets stories
are:
1. he listens to the police scanner and goes to find out what is
happening.
2. the police send him arrest reports.
3. sometimes he just walks around to see what is going on.
4. He takes pictures.
Once when he was taking a picture of a crime the friend of the
person getting arrested tried to attack him for taking a photo,
but the police saved George.
He studied journalism in college.

How To Write an Article
by Marisa Rafal
Writing a big article can be a lot of
work. You have to take quotes from a
ton of different people and find a way
to weave them into the threads of your
article. It’s even harder if you are co-
writing the article because you have to
find where her article is going to fit in.
For instance; if your article is about
baked goods you would want to put
her piece about brownies in where you
talk about them, not where you talk
about cookies.
I was writing an article on the craft fair
and I was sitting for three hours
straight trying to finish. It took forever
but in the end it was worth it. I went to
school the next day and the secretary
complimented my article, I was so
pleased and I can’t wait to see it in the
Somerville Journal! So if you do feel
the urge to write an article Happening
would be happy to put it in this
newspaper or even consider it for our
magazine. Good Luck!
Somerville News
Marisa Rafal
The Somerville News is a local city-wide newspaper.
It’s well made but it only has like four or five actual
employees. There is a man who works there named
Jim Clark, who does the cartoons for the
newspaper, and is also the graphic designer (which
may sound fun and easy, but it can also be highly
stressful and hard to do). Another man, whom we
did not meet, but who seems to be the owner is
named Jamie Norton. Last but not least, a man
named George Hasset who seems to do some of
the real hands on work, as an editor.
George Hasset writes most of the articles for the
newspaper, he will sometimes go on line to see if
there are any big events going on in Somerville, like
a festival or an art fair that he hadn’t heard about
and then he will go and check it out. If there aren’t
any events or things like that going on, he will go
and find some for himself. Some times he will see
police officers and he will grab his camera and go
check out the scene then he will come back and
write it up. He says that the crime section is one of
his favorite sections in the newspaper, partially
because it is so action filled.
Another thing that Mr.Hasset does is collect articles
from other people and fit them into the newspaper.
Mr. Hasset has studied journalism since he was in
High school. He was in college when he saw now-
hiring signs for the newspaper. He worked for the
newspaper for a couple of years, people quit and
slowly he worked his way up and he pretty much is
boss now. He does hope to finish college soon
though.

Hunter Pope by Katie Massie
Have you ever lost someone who isn’t a good friend, but who you saw sometimes, and whose house you’d been to once or twice, and who you had known for a long time, and who you had had good times with, but you barely saw each other? Because I have. Before February vacation, I would not be able to truthfully be able to say I have. But, as of February 15th, I am now able to say I have. I have known Hunter Pope since I was 5 or 6. If someone mentioned Hunter Pope, I would know who he was. But, on Feb. 15th, Hunter died because of a flu that might have gone to his heart. On the 21st was Hunter’s funeral and all I could think about was how I would never be able to see his funny, toothy, grin again. It is so easy to try to erase all the sad memories and to expect to see him at my church on Sunday. Hunter was a funny person, and the last time I saw him he had a black eye, though he wouldn’t tell us why. He was bouncing a ball around the room and smiling. Hunter Pope was a goofy person, and I will always remember him.
